Before you sign
Pennsylvania's Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act gives you real protection. Ask for the contractor's Attorney General registration number, which must appear on the contract and estimate. Make sure the written contract lists the work, materials, price, schedule and who gets the permits, and remember you have three business days after signing to cancel. Keep deposits within the legal limit of one-third of the price, plus special-order materials, on contracts over $1,000.
